The Liturgy of the Last Ember

The Liturgy of the Last Ember

An order of the Sacred Flame, in the contemplative tradition of the Order of Light.

This liturgy belongs to a tradition most believed lost.

The Order of Light — a small contemplative brotherhood within the greater Silver Order — kept vigil over the holy sites of Drakkenheim for generations. They performed the sacred rites. They preserved the relics. When the meteor fell, the last of the Order's knights were in the city, tending its holy places.

None were seen to leave.

The liturgy below was thought to have died with them.

It did not.

The rite has three movements. The opening invocation is spoken first. Then each phase, in order.

The bracketed spaces in Phase 2 are blanks — places where the celebrant speaks the name of one of the dead aloud. At least one name must be spoken. Others present may speak names too, if they choose. The rite holds space for them.

✦ Opening Invocation ✦

Spoken kneeling, before any other action.

Sacred Flame — You who burn in the small places, You who do not go out —

I come to a place where the dead are not at rest. I come bearing water and fire and the names of the lost. I come to do the work my brothers cannot.

If I am unworthy, hear me anyway. If I am alone, hear me anyway. If the dark in this place is older than my voice, hear me anyway.

Let the rite be acceptable. Let the dead be remembered. Let the Flame come to this place again.

✦ Phase 1 — The Cleansing ✦

The celebrant sprinkles holy water over the body, the slab, and the four directions of the chamber.

By water that has been blessed, by water that remembers the springs of the mountains, by water that knows the shape of grief —

I cleanse this place of what is not the Flame's.

Where the haze has crept, let it withdraw. Where the dark has settled, let it lift. Where the corruption has taken root, let it loosen its hand.

This ground is sanctified. This slab is sanctified. This body, which was beloved, is sanctified.

The Flame is here. The dark is not. So it has been spoken. So let it be.

✦ Phase 2 — The Witnessing ✦

The celebrant kneels at the slab and speaks the names of the dead.

I am here to name the dead. I am here to say what they were, so that what they were is not forgotten.

I name first the one whose body lies before me.

She was called [name of the saint]. She was a healer. She was a martyr. She gave her life refusing to leave one she could not save.

May she be remembered.

A space for breath. The chamber listens.

I name now the brothers of my order who died in this place. I do not know all of them by name. I know what they were. They were keepers of candles. They were the last men who knelt in this chapel before the sky came down.

May they be remembered.

Now the celebrant speaks more slowly. If others are present, they may speak names here. The pattern is simple:

And I name now —

[name] — who was [what they were].

May they be remembered.

This refrain may be repeated as many times as those present wish to speak. When the naming is complete:

All who have been named are named. All who have been remembered are remembered. The dead have been honored in this place.

✦ Phase 3 — The Sealing ✦

The celebrant rises and places both hands on the brow of the body.

Sacred Flame, receive what was hers. Receive what was theirs. Receive what is yours and has always been yours.

Let her sleep. Let them sleep. Let no further corruption find this body, this slab, this chamber. Let the candles around her burn until the Flame itself returns.

By the Flame that does not go out, by the brothers who went before me, by the Light I carry —

(spoken quietly, almost only to oneself)

let this be enough.

Amen.

The celebrant lowers their hands. The rite is complete.

A Note on This Text

The Order of Light has always understood that faith spoken poorly is still faith.

The Flame listens to intent as much as to wording.

If the celebrant stumbles, the rite continues. The Flame is kind to those who are doing their best.

The Liturgy of the Last Ember was performed in the Tomb of Saint Brenna, beneath the Chapel of Saint Brenna, by Drakzen Velrith — last knight of the Order of Light — during the events of Session 10 – Chapel of Saint Brenna (Part II).

Saint Brenna is at rest.

The names Drakzen spoke in the Witnessing phase were given to him by High Flamekeeper Ophelia Reed before he entered the chapel. Her letter — containing what the Order's records preserve of Saint Brenna and the brothers who fell with her — can be found here: A Note from the High Flamekeeper
