Fall of Drakkenheim
The Fall of Drakkenheim
“The night the sky broke, Drakkenheim ceased to belong to this world.”
For centuries, Drakkenheim stood as one of the great cities of Westemär — a center of culture, faith, trade, and royal authority. Its skyline was crowned by soaring spires, the Cathedral of St. Vitruvio’s grand dome, and the enigmatic Inscrutable Tower, seat of arcane study and dangerous secrets.
All of this changed in a single night.
The Night of the Meteor
Without warning, the heavens split with violet light.
Witnesses described a blazing star tearing across the sky, trailing a tail of unnatural color — not fire, but something colder, stranger. The meteor fractured as it descended, splitting into burning fragments that howled like living things.
One shard struck the heart of the city.
Another collided with the Inscrutable Tower itself.
The impact shattered stone, toppled walls, and unleashed a wave of arcane force that rippled outward in a silent flash. Buildings crumbled. The Cathedral’s great dome cracked. The Tower was split in two — yet its upper half did not fall, held suspended by writhing magical forces that still defy explanation.
Those who survived the initial devastation would soon discover the catastrophe had only begun.
The Birth of the Haze
In the crater left behind, strange crystalline growths emerged — luminous violet stones that pulsed faintly with otherworldly energy.
These crystals, now called delerium, radiate corrupting magical influence.
Creatures exposed to delerium began to change. Some sickened. Others mutated. Still others were driven mad by whispers only they could hear.
Soon after, a shimmering eldritch fog began to spread outward from the impact site.
This phenomenon became known as the Haze.
Within it, reality bends unpredictably:
- Magic behaves erratically
- Creatures twist into monstrous forms
- Time and distance seem unreliable
- Whispers echo from unseen sources
Even now, years later, the Haze continues to expand slowly beyond the ruined city walls.
The Collapse of a Kingdom
Drakkenheim was abandoned in the aftermath.
Trade routes failed. Refugees fled to nearby settlements such as Emberwood Village. Noble houses fractured as succession disputes and political maneuvering replaced unity.
No army could reclaim the city.
No church could cleanse it.
No mage could fully explain what had occurred.
Rumors spread that the royal family perished in the catastrophe — though no bodies were ever conclusively identified.
In the vacuum left behind, competing factions now seek control of Drakkenheim’s ruins, each believing the delerium holds the key to power, salvation, or truth.
What Is Known
Very little reliable information exists regarding the true nature of the meteor.
Scholars debate whether it was:
- A natural cosmic event
- A magical catastrophe
- A divine punishment
- A planar intrusion
- A weapon unleashed by unknown forces
Fragments of research survive in hidden libraries, sealed vaults, and the memories of those few who study the Haze without succumbing to its influence.
Many believe the meteor was not an isolated incident.
Some whisper that other worlds have suffered similar fates.
What Remains
Today, Drakkenheim stands as a shattered monument to catastrophe.
Collapsed districts lie silent beneath drifting violet mist.
Monsters roam streets once filled with merchants and pilgrims.
Arcane storms flicker across broken rooftops.
And at the city’s center, the crater still glows faintly.
Adventurers, treasure seekers, pilgrims, and opportunists now travel toward the ruins — each drawn by their own reasons.
Some seek fortune.
Some seek answers.
Some seek redemption.
Few are prepared for what waits within the Haze.
